Aberdeen-based firms back Pamela Stephenson Connolly’s challenge

Pamela Stephenson Connolly’s challenge to swim from Wales to Ireland for Cancer Research has been aided by the support of two Aberdeen-based firms.

Diving training and equipment experts Aberdeen Watersports, and Offshore Survival and Health & Safety specialists Falck Nutec teamed up to offer their facilities, training and equipment to the star.

‘The Swim’ will see the psychologist, wife of comedian Billy Connolly, undertake the challenge to swim across the Irish sea as part of a team of celebrities, alongside the likes of singer Ronan Keating, Virgin chairman Sir Richard Branson and Olympian Steve Parry.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star added that “It will take us 40 hours to swim the Irish Sea, during this time 1,400 people in the United Kingdom will be diagnosed with cancer. The 56 miles stretch will be tackled by a ten-person relay team, and there is a risk that we could encounter sharks, lion’s mane jellyfish, whales (and perhaps a few mermaids!). I am grateful that Jason Topley at Aberdeen Watersports was able to provide me with the equipment and knowledge that he did. I am also highly appreciative for the time that Falck Nutec allowed me to use their facilities for, as this was an excellent way to trial my equipment out before the challenge”.

Falck Nutec Assistant Centre Manger, Catherine Liebnitz, sees this as a meaningful cause that the firm were delighted to help out with: “We were only informed a few hours before Pamela’s visit that she would like to use our facilities, and fortunately we were in a position that this was feasible. It was fantastic having such a well-known face in our centre and to help out with such a worthwhile cause. We wish Pamela all the best with The Swim and would be delighted to welcome her back anytime”
