Local sports academy inspired by 2012

Aberdeen Sports Leadership Academy [Grampian Leaders] has become the first initiative in the North-east of Scotland to be granted the Inspire mark by the London 2012 Inspire programme.

The London 2012 Inspire programme recognises innovative and exceptional projects that are directly inspired by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The academy, which sits within Active Schools Aberdeen, receives financial support from the sportscotland innovation fund. The academy offers high-quality regular support, training and development for young people who are committed to actively volunteering in sport and physical activity opportunities within their school or community.

The academy is open to 20 students in S4-S6 who attend local authority schools in Aberdeen. The young people taking part complete a sports leadership qualification and a sport-specific governing body leader award. In addition to volunteering, participants are given first aid, child protection and disability inclusion training.

Aberdeen City Council’s Convener of Education, Culture and Sport Committee Councillor John West said: “It is fantastic news that Aberdeen Sports Leadership Academy has been awarded Inspire mark accreditation. Volunteers play a vital role in sport at all levels so this initiative is a great way to encourage young people to volunteer and helps them to develop the skills and experience that will enable them to be fantastic volunteer leaders of the future.”

Seb Coe, Chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, said: “We want to use the power of the Games to inspire change. The Inspire programme is recognising the work our partners all round the UK are doing to help us achieve this vision now – one year away from the start of the Games. I congratulate Aberdeen Sports Leadership Academy for securing the Inspire mark and wish you every success with your work.”

Hilary Templeton, lead manager for volunteering at sportscotland, added: “Aberdeen Sports Leadership Academy programme will inspire young people to volunteer in sport in the run-up to London 2012, ensuring the young people involved maximise their development and gain a broader experience in volunteering, which will inspire those involved to continue volunteering as they get older.”

Applications are welcome for the start of the new academy, which will run from September 2011 to April 2012. It is based at Hazlehead Primary School and meets on a Tuesday evening between 6pm-8pm. Attendance at all sessions is compulsory.

For further information on the academy or to request an application form please telephone (01224) 577740 or email grampianleaders@sportaberdeen.co.uk Completed forms must be returned by Friday 09 September 2011.

There is no cost to the young people who attend the Leadership Academy as funding is provided from sportscotland and supported by sportaberdeen.
