The homes are being developed at 17-19 Golden Acre, Johnshaven in response to a need for affordable housing in the area and following the demolition of properties that were damaged by fire in 2007.
Six units have been developed in conjunction with CHAP construction and are available for rent for people on Aberdeenshire Council housing waiting list.
Four, one-bedroom flats and two, three-bedroom semi-detached homes have been built as part of phase one of the programme of house building that has taken place across Aberdeenshire. Homes have also been completed in Mintlaw and Tarves.
Aberdeenshire Council currently has around 7,200 people on its housing waiting list and has secured in the region of £4 million from the Scottish Government towards the cost of building new homes.
Future homes are planned for development in Laurencekirk, Stonehaven, Banff, Inverurie, Cruden Bay and Alford. The new council homes throughout Aberdeenshire will meet the highest standards of efficiency and fuel economy.
Benholm and Johnshaven Community Council secretary Chris Greene is supportive of the development and said he looked forward to welcoming the new occupants to the area.
Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Social Work and Housing Committee Councillor Gurudeo Saluja said: “Affordable housing is a key priority for the council and to see these homes in Johnshaven and other areas being completed is fantastic and a boost to the community.
“The quality is outstanding and tenants will, I am sure, be happy also to finally see the result of months of work by the council and developer.”
Vice chairman Councillor Carl Nelson added: “We are providing new homes to people on our waiting list and also meet the housing needs of the area.
”It’s an important part of the council’s policy to provide quality housing and I’m pleased to see these new homes completed.”
