NORTH EAST SCOTLAND SALARY GUIDE - OFFSHORE EUROPE SPECIAL EDITION

Companies in Aberdeen City and Shire are focusing on growth according to a leading Aberdeen recruitment company.

In its second north east salary guide, launched at Offshore Europe 2011, Thorpe Molloy Recruitment is reporting continual improvement in its recruitment activity across all of its specialist divisions, as companies increase staff numbers.

The guide provides information on basic salary levels for junior through to senior roles in the company’s specialist divisions of Executive, Accountancy and Finance, Human Resources, Office Personnel, Engineering, Commercial and the Legal profession.

Managing Director Amanda McCulloch says “Despite uncertainty around national and international economies, many of our clients in the oil and gas sector are concentrating on new and expanding markets globally as well as projects on the UKCS.”

“Compared to this time 12 months ago, our specialist divisions are experiencing greater levels of recruitment activity for permanent and temporary placements, but cost pressures on business have only caused salaries to rise significantly in niche areas, where there is intense competition for talent, such as oil and gas law and engineering.”

“Within engineering, the skills shortage is driving rates upwards as this is currently a candidate’s market. Although companies are investing in apprenticeship programmes, training and alternative sources of skilled labour, such as the armed forces, the specialised, technical nature of the work means that experienced personnel are often hired from other operator or oil service companies, pushing up rates.”

“Indicative of growth, companies are adding to headcount at all levels and positions which become vacant are being back-filled. We are also witnessing increased demand for experienced in-house recruiters, business development/technical sales, commercial contracts and QHSE professionals, as well as systems implementation contractors following M&A activities.”

“Mindful of efficiency and cost effectiveness, the attraction and retention of experienced employees who consistently add value are key priorities for companies while at board level, enhancing diversity and breadth of experience is most significant.”

“But good candidates also have expectations which, in addition to competitive salaries, include robust appraisal and career planning programmes and comprehensive benefits packages. At the senior end of the market there is a definite focus the value of Total Reward packages, and as such, we have recently witnessed changes to lock in periods, “golden welcome” payments and long term incentives.”

Gerry Brough, Economic and Business Project Director, Aberdeen City Council says, "As Aberdeen enters the next age of energy it is vital that the city continues to attract the level of expertise the energy industry will need to grow and prosper in the future.”

“The city stakeholders are actively pursuing a strategy focussed on attracting the skills we need whilst continuing to anchor the knowledge and expertise that already exists in Aberdeen.”

“Aberdeen is consistently acknowledged as one of the most desirable places to live in the world with an excellent standard of living, education and lifestyle.”

“We are confident our proactive actions will support our long term skills attraction ambitions for a strong industry base and the Thorpe Molloy Recruitment salary guide is a clear indication that the rewards are there for those who wish to make Aberdeen their home.”
