Oil and gas professionals needed for Offshore Europe careers eventOIL and gas professionals are being urged to sign up to a speed networking session which aims to inform the next generation of energy workers about the diverse range of careers the industry offers. UK skills body OPITO will host a ‘Your Journey’ Pupil – Student – Professional event at Aberdeen Football Club on September 8 during Offshore Europe.
The initiative brings together university students and those currently working in the industry to help inform school pupils about the vocational paths, roles and experiences available to them when making their career choices.
It is the second time OPITO has run the event which has already received the backing of students from both the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University. The organisation now wants to hear from professionals from a range of both technical and commercial backgrounds.
OPITO are seeking those working in a cross-section of disciplines from geoscience, engineering, drilling, diving and aviation sectors through to finance, legal, IT, procurement and HR roles in order to showcase the full scope of careers the oil and gas industry offers.
“It is vital that we continue to attract the next generation of talent that this industry needs. The perception among many pupils and guidance staff is that the industry is all about engineering and working offshore,” said Mike Duncan, OPITO’s skills development director.
“‘Your Journey’ seeks to inform pupils about life and careers in the oil and gas industry. As well as helping showcase the diversity of careers, it helps school pupils see where their interests and school subjects fit in an industry context.
“It provides the opportunity for the next generation of talent to hear first-hand about what inspired people to join the industry, their experiences while studying and their route into oil and gas.
“In order to give a real representation of the scope of careers within the industry, OPITO want to hear from professionals across all disciplines of industry.”
The networking session forms part of Energise Your Future at Offshore Europe, OPITO’s flagship careers event which will see 250 S5 and S6 pupils from throughout Aberdeen City and Shire go on an interactive journey through the show at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.
Energise Your Future will see companies including TAQA, Maersk Oil UK, Shell, BP, Schlumberger Oilfield UK Plc, Wood Group and AMEC provide a unique interactive activity on their stand to let pupils try their hand at being everything from a crane operator to an ROV pilot.
Your Journey, the Pupil – Student – Professional session will run from 9.30am – 12pm on September 8. For further information or to secure your company’s support at this or the EYF event at the AECC, please contact Diane Johnston on 01224 787805or email diane.johnston@opito.com 147 views
