Osiligi Maasai Warriors visit Robert Gordon’s CollegeThe Osiligi Warriors, an eight-strong group of Kenyan Maasai, recently visited Robert Gordon’s College Junior School. The Warriors are currently in Scotland for a five week tour but are leaving to return to Africa soon. The group performed a one hour show of tribal song and dance, plus their celebrated jumping, to all of the excited P7 pupils.
Currently, the P7 year group are studying “Kenya” as their people, place and environment topic. The visit will greatly enhance the learning in the classroom providing an opportunity to experience and enjoy the diverse culture of the Maasai. Head of Junior School Mrs Mollie Mennie said, “This is a great example of the new Curriculum for Excellence with its cross-curricular emphasis”.
Prior to the performance, there was a presentation related to the charitable support which the group currently receives for education, local amenities and farming in Kenya. The show was followed by a question and answer session.
Pupil Isabelle Whiteside added, “It was the first time in my life that I had witnessed such a vibrant event. I was most interested to hear about the stories behind their tribal songs and I was taken aback by their dazzling, bright clothes. The Warriors work extremely hard in order to support their community and I was touched by the fact that they were raising money to build a new school for the children in their village”. 144 views
