Press statement: Fee setting

Robert Gordon University’s Board of Governors has today (23 September 2011) approved the university’s fee structure for rest of UK (RUK) students for 2012 entry.

RGU has adopted a tiered approach with three bands of undergraduate fees reflecting the fact that some courses cost more to deliver than others, for example those involving laboratory or studio work versus classroom teaching.

The three bands are as follows:

Band 1 – All business, management and social science courses - £5,000/year

Band 2 – All art and design, architecture and built environment, computing, engineering, health and science courses - £6,750/year

Band 3 – Master of Pharmacy - £8,500/year.

Many of the courses at RGU incorporate a full year paid placement as part of the curriculum, which will be charged at 50% of the headline fee. As a result the cost of four year degree courses at RGU will be as follows:

Total fee for 4 year degree                  Without placement year                      With placement year

Band 1                                                 £20,000                                               £17,500

Band 2                                                 £27,000                                               £23,625

Band 3                                                 £34,000                                               n/a – no placement incorporated into MPharm

A number of students may be able to secure entry into the 2nd year of one of our 4-year degree programmes. In this case, the student would benefit from a reduction in the total fee payable for the degree programme, equivalent to a full year’s fee for the relevant fee band.

The university is also looking to establish a scheme for scholarships and bursaries eligible to all students, including RUK students, and will present plans in due course.

Professor Ferdinand von Prondzynski, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Robert Gordon University said:

“In setting our RUK bands we believe we have developed a framework that is both fair and pragmatic. By basing our charges on the cost of delivering our degrees, we are ensuring that we do not make profit from students who wish to study at RGU, while ensuring their study is not subsidised from revenues received to support Scottish and EU students. We believe that under the proposed structure, the university’s position is fair and equitable to all UK students.”
