Professional basketball team helps Aberdeen school pupils spring into actionPupils at Kingswells Primary School will team up with professional basketball players tomorrow [01 November] to take part in a national healthy living campaign. The Jump2It programme shows young people the benefits of an active lifestyle and provides an introduction to basketball by players from the Glasgow Rocks, Scotland’s only professional basketball team. Jump2It is organised by Scottish Sports Futures, which has worked in partnership with Active Schools Aberdeen to deliver the initiative to schools in Aberdeen. As well as providing physical activity, the programme also covers the importance of fitness and healthy eating and the dangers of smoking and drinking alcohol.
Active Schools Aberdeen manager Graeme Dale said: “We are delighted to continue to work in partnership with Scottish Sports Futures and the Glasgow Rocks basketball team to make this programme a success locally.
“It is great to see a professional sports team taking a pro-active role in promoting healthy living and an active lifestyle at grassroots level. "The programme has widened opportunities for sustained participation in sport by establishing new school basketball clubs, enhancing existing club structures, whilst motivating youngsters to get more involved in sport generally."
Glasgow Rocks player-coach, Sterling Davis said: “We are delighted to be rolling out the Jump2It programme to kids from across Aberdeen and giving them a chance to experience the amazing fun that can be had through basketball.”
Kingswells is one of eight Aberdeen primary schools that will be participating in Jump2It. The others are Danestone, Fernielea, Forehill, Glashieburn, Hazlehead, Middleton Park and Stoneywood primaries. 118 views
