Pupils in the spotlight: Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament

Robert Gordon's College made it through the first round heat of the Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament on 30th November 2011.

The competition is run by the Law Society of Scotland and 128 teams from schools across the country have entered this year. Debating against the High School of Dundee and Gordonstoun, the College’s team of Megan Lukins (17) and Maura Buchanan (14) impressed the judges with the persuasiveness of their arguments on the right to privacy being more important than the freedom of the press.

Another Robert Gordon’s pupil, Morag Forbes (15), was awarded the prize for the best speech from the floor. The next round of the competition will be held at the end of January and the final is scheduled to take place in June in the Scottish Parliament.
