PUPILS’ WINNING PRESENTATION SECURES £3K FOR CLAN CANCER SUPPORT

Aberdeen charity CLAN Cancer Support (CLAN) has received a £3,000 grant after pupils at an Aberdeenshire school took part in a nationwide community involvement project.

Five teams from Westhill Academy participated in the Wood Family Trust’s Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI), a scheme that involves pupils engaging in the social needs of their community and carrying out a presentation on a chosen charity that they believe to be making the biggest difference to their local area.

The judges decided to award £3,000 to CLAN following a presentation by fifth year pupils Lisa Thompson, 16, Harriett McBoyle, 17, Samantha McNeil, 17, and Natasha Bruce, 17, on their chosen charity.

Other charities chosen by the participating teams were Aberdeen-based Archway and Befriend A Child.

Kate Percival, principal teacher of guidance at Westhill Academy , said: “The YPI scheme is very worthwhile for our pupils as it helps them to learn about social needs and issues in their local community as well as using skills that will prove to be valuable in their future careers. All of the pupils worked very hard and the standard of presentations was very high.”

CLAN fundraising co-ordinator Debra Christie added: “We are delighted to receive this grant thanks to the hard work of Lisa, Harriett, Samantha and Natasha and it was obvious that they had researched their presentation accurately and thoroughly.

“Part of the girls’ presentation focused on the training that is needed at CLAN and this is where the grant money will be allocated. They also expressed an enthusiasm to volunteer for CLAN so once their exams are over, we are looking forward to working with them.”

CLAN is an independent charity which offers support to anyone affected by cancer. Based in Aberdeen , the charity covers the whole of Grampian, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN is also developing services in the community and now has a presence in Ballater, Inverurie, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Orkney and Shetland.
