Referendum considered for City Gardens Project

A referendum could be held to gauge public support for the City Gardens Project.

Councillors are to discuss the possibility of holding a referendum on the future use of Union Terrace Gardens at a meeting of the Enterprise, Planning and Infrastructure Committee on Tuesday [15 November].

The report, City Gardens – Possible Referendum, recommends that the council holds a public referendum to gauge public support for the City Gardens Project and that a further report is submitted to the Finance and Resources Committee seeking a budget of up to £250,000 to pay for it.

Report author Gerry Brough, Economic and Business Development project director wrote: “The purpose of any referendum should be to gauge public support for the City Gardens Project, on the basis of a preferred design proposal arrived at by means of the international design competition organised by Aberdeen City Gardens Trust Ltd.

“Since the referendum has been proposed as a mechanism for advising councillors, it should be non-binding.”

The report states that only those on the electoral roll for Aberdeen should be invited to participate in the referendum.

Approval for the wording of a referendum will be sought from Full Council, if the Finance and Resources Committee agrees to allocate the necessary funding.
