Rutherford To Lead McGrigors Corporate Team From Aberdeen

Legal firm McGrigors has appointed Aberdeen partner John Rutherford as Head of its UK Corporate team and to the firm’s Board.

As Head of Corporate he has responsibility for leading around 150 people spread throughout Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

McGrigors corporate team focuses on acquisitions and disposals, capital markets, private equity, and corporate reorganisations, with an emphasis on the oil and gas service sector. In the past financial year it was the most active corporate team in Scotland, acting on 71 deals with a value of over £4bn - including the landmark £607m sale of oil services business PSN to Wood Group.

Since qualifying as a lawyer in 1982 Mr Rutherford has specialised in corporate law. He is a former partner of Ledingham Chalmers and has been a partner in McGrigors since 2006.

Mr Rutherford has acted in numerous oil and gas related corporate transactions including the MBO and subsequent sale to Petrofac of RGIT Montrose, the acquisition by Cal Dive of Helix and the subsequent sale of the RDS division to Baker Hughes, and the acquisition by Superior Energy in three separate deals of Premier Oilfield Rentals, Duffy McGovern and Hallin Marine. He also acted for the University of Aberdeen in relation to its recent merger with the Rowett Research Institute.

McGrigors managing partner, Richard Masters, said the appointment bolstered the firm’s management team and underlined its strength in having experienced lawyers located in strategic locations.

Mr Masters said: “John has a great deal of experience which we can utilise, not only with his leadership of our corporate team, but in the general running of our business through his full participation on the Board.

“By appointing an Aberdeen partner to this important post we are also demonstrating the value we place on our Aberdeen office in the wider McGrigors organisation.”

John Rutherford added: “It's an exciting time to be on the Board given the recent office launch in Qatar and our new link with US firm Husch Blackwell – something which will effectively give us as a firm, a greater ability to service U.S. focussed work. McGrigors continues to go from strength to strength and I am keen to add to that by helping the team win more mandates for corporate work across the UK and beyond."

There are now two partners from the firm's Aberdeen office promoted to the board following the recent appointment of Head of Energy Bob Ruddiman. McGrigors’ Board now comprises partners from across the firm's Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, and Aberdeen offices.
