School of Engineering to introduce new LabVIEW Academy with orientation eventThe School of Engineering at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, has announced plans to launch an innovative industrial engineering programme in September 2011 that aims to bring industry and academia closer together. The first of its kind in the UK, this new programme will be introduced to engineering students and professionals at a free orientation seminar and workshop hosted at the university on Wednesday 15 June.
The School of Engineering's LabVIEW Academy is a tailored version of an internationally recognised curriculum created by National Instruments (NI) - one of the world's leading providers of software and hardware for measurement and control. The NI LabVIEW Academy will act as a central theme in this newly- devised programme.
Developed by the university's academics over a period of nearly 18 months in close collaboration with industry, the programme has been designed to bridge the recognised gap between state-of the-art technology, academia and current industry requirements in the area of applied instrumentation. It will be suitable for all technological disciplines including mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineering.
In its full-time format, the course will comprise a two-week intensive programme carried out within the School of Engineering's newly-established and dedicated LabVIEW and instrumentation facilities on the university's Schoolhill campus.
Upon completion of the course, and with sufficient practice, participants will have gained the necessary skills to take the Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer (CLAD) exam, conducted by NI, which is a much sought professional qualification.
The course will initially be offered as a full-time fee-paying professional studies course in September 2011 to students who have completed their final year this summer. In early 2012, it will be rolled out to industry, offering engineering professionals the opportunity to undertake the programme in a full or part-time format.
Dr Gunti Gunarathne, a Reader and Technology Consultant within the School of Engineering, has been the leading force behind the creation of the new programme. He explained: "We are delighted to be working with NI and industry on this new endeavour. This new programme represents a significant move in bringing academia and industry closer together and, given the large industrial base in and around Scotland, Robert Gordon University is well placed to harness this opportunity for the benefit of all concerned.
"I look forward to meeting a broad cross section of students and professionals at this month's orientation event."
Students and professionals from the engineering community are invited to attend a free orientation seminar and workshop hosted at the university on Wednesday 15 June from 9am to 4.30pm. The morning session is a technical seminar with major industrial case studies worldwide and an overview of the LabVIEW Academy programme. Attendees on the day will receive a hands-on introduction to the LabVIEW based instrumentation with the industry-approved hardware and software that will be used in the programme.
The presentations will be delivered by National Instruments and members of the School of Engineering. Spaces for the afternoon workshop are limited and applicants will be put on a waiting list.
Those looking to book onto the morning seminar and/or to get a place on the waiting list for the afternoon workshop, should contact Dr Gunarathne on 01224262443 or via email at g.gunarathne@rgu.ac.uk 155 views
