School’s Anti-Racism Stand Wins Top Award

Pupils promote equality and world harmony

A North-East school has celebrated years of promoting diversity and combating racism with a prestigious prize.

Rothienorman School won the Anne Frank statue at the annual event at Pittodrie stadium.

The Anne Frank Awards are run by the Grampian Racial Equality Council (GREC) and promote racial and cultural diversity and inclusion.

They are named after the young Dutch girl whose family was persecuted by the Nazis but who dreamed of a world without hatred. Rothienorman’s winning entry was a scrapbook which showed a range of activities the school has held, including multi-cultural fairs with pupils, parents and education staff talking about their cultures.

Head teacher Audrey Gregor said: “The book showed some of the ways we promote and celebrate diversity and how we combat racism in our school.”

Primary six pupil Dylan Hansen, 11, has Norwegian roots and his mum and grandfather took part in the fair. He said: “My grandpa made a traditional cake for pupils and staff to try and my mum brought in my sister’s traditional Norwegian dress for pupils to look at.”

The school also ran a seven-week World Food Project through the Hunger for Success initiative and had a class decorated to look like an African landscape. Pupils also designed posters to promote equality.
