Shetland’s Energy Future to Be Discussed in Two Day Visit

Shetland business leaders will have the chance to discuss the future of Shetland’s energy power industry with National Grid, Shetland Islands Council, Viking Energy and North Scotland Industries Group (NSIG) later this month.

The event, organised by energy and engineering body NSIG and Shetland Islands Council will be held March 16 and 17 and will include presentations on the potential renewable activities for the island.

Alison Kay, commercial director for transmissions at National Grid, will deliver a presentation on the company’s plans for Shetland and its vision for renewable energy on the second day of the event and will be followed by a site visit in the afternoon.

The following month, NSIG has organised an event for Total, which is leading the oil and gas project, Laggan-Tormore, to deliver a presentation in Lerwick to raise peoples awareness of the potential business opportunities, which will come from the new oil and gas development, located West coast of Shetland.

NSIG chief executive Ian Couper, said: “We look forward to hearing what National Grid has to say about the future requirements and its plans for the islands The event will help raise people’s awareness of the potential that the renewable industry could provide for local businesses.

“The Total event, will again give local companies an insight into its plans for developing this major oil and gas discovery and hopefully highlight the opportunities where local suppliers may benefit.”

With more than 100 members from across the North of Scotland and the islands, Invergordon-based NSIG seeks to assist local businesses by exploiting opportunities, raising the profile of local companies, enhancing business prospects and addressing issues that may be of concern for local businesses.

Alison Kay, National Grid commercial director, said: "Britain is undergoing an energy revolution in the coming decades.  Working with the Scottish Transmission Owners we are keen to help Shetland realise its huge potential for renewable energy and working with groups like NSIG is a vital way to help achieve this.”
