The Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) and Modern Apprenticeships (MA) in Business and Administration, are nationally recognised awards accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) or Education Development International (EDI), in partnership with the Council for Administration (CFA), and are aimed at people in administrative roles across all occupations and sectors of employment. Like all SVQs this qualification is competence based. This means that it is linked to the candidate's ability to competently perform a range of tasks connected with their work.

Who is this SVQ for?

These SVQs are work-orientated qualifications and are suitable for those who undertake administrative related activities.

They are open to candidates with no entry barriers or previous academic attainment or learning.

The aim of these qualifications is to recognise the skills and competences of candidates in the workplace. These qualifications provide individuals with an opportunity to demonstrate skills and knowledge needed for a career in Business and Administration. The units encompass a broad range of competencies from the Business & Administration sector.

Units

What does the SVQ in Business & Administration consist of?

The SVQ consists of a number of Units adopting the following format:

• Overview

• Performance Indicators

• Knowledge and understanding

Units are simply different tasks that are familiar areas of work to all administrators

Each unit consists of:

• Overview

This provides information on what the unit is about, who the unit is intended for, links with other units and a list of the main generic units which are needed. This section of the unit is for guidance.

• Performance Indicators

This section describes the activities administrators are expected to perform.

• Knowledge and understanding

This is split into general knowledge and understanding; industry / sector specific knowledge and understanding; and context specific knowledge and understanding. This section defines the knowledge and understanding required to carry out the role effectively.

SVQ Levels

SVQ LEVEL 2

Business & Administration

SVQ - Level 2

The Business and Administration Level 2 qualification is intended for individuals whose role involves carrying out a broad range of administrative activities, requiring a limited amount of supervision and working with some autonomy. The individual will be working as part of a team ensuring the provision of information and resources to others. The individual's work situation will provide the opportunity to be involved in a range of administration activities. To achieve the full award, candidates must complete 8 units in total, including 3 mandatory units and 5 optional units. Candidates choose the most appropriate optional units which best suit their work situation and job role.

SVQ LEVEL 3

Business & Administration

SVQ - Level 3

The Business and Administration Level 3 qualification is intended for individuals whose role involves carrying out administrative duties with a considerable amount of responsibility and autonomy. The individual will be contributing to the development and implementation of administrative services within the organisation, and have a substantial amount of administrative experience. To achieve the full award, candidates must complete 8 units in total, including 3 mandatory units and 5 optional units. Candidates choose the optional units which best suit their work situation and job role.

SVQ LEVEL 4

Business & Administration

SVQ - Level 4

The Business and Administration level 4 qualification is intended for individuals who are working at a senior level with considerable responsibility for the management of systems and resources, working with an extensive degree of autonomy. The individual's role will involve developing and monitoring facilities and resources to maintain an administrative service within the organisation. To achieve the full award, candidates must complete 8 units in total, including 3 mandatory units and 5 optional units.
