Small Gestures to Make a Big Difference

ACVO Volunteer Centre will be encouraging Aberdonians to try their hand at volunteering on national Make a Difference Day.

Make a Difference Day, which is this coming Monday (24th October), celebrates the contribution which volunteers make to the UK and encourages people who have never donated their time before to look into volunteering opportunities.

Rod McDermid and Mike Melvin, Volunteer Co-ordinators with ACVO Volunteer Centre, will be at Aberdeen Central Library from 11am-3pm on Monday offering advice and information about how to make a difference in Aberdeen and the surrounding area.

Mike states, “We find a lot of people assume that volunteering would be too big a time commitment in their already busy lives, and what we want to get across on Monday is that this doesn’t have to be the case. Volunteering can take as much or as little time as a person has to offer, and even the smallest of gestures can make an enormous difference to another person’s life.”

ACVO Volunteer Centre currently holds details of around 800 volunteering opportunities in Aberdeen City, ranging from manning the start line at one-off sports events to supporting vulnerable families on an ongoing basis, working in a charity shop to fostering cats and dogs.

This year’s Make a Difference Day theme is Combating Loneliness and Isolation, so Rod and Mike will also be handing out guides to simple activities which can help people to feel more supported.
