Space Solutions Mounts Legal Challenge For Growth

Commercial property specialists Space Solutions has appointed one of the UK’s leading corporate lawyers Malcolm McPherson as its first non executive Chairman to propel the firm’s development strategy.

Malcolm, Senior Partner of HBJ Gateley Wareing, specialises in corporate affairs, advising many companies at a strategic level as well as seeking deal making opportunities across the business world.

Malcolm, who is currently on the board of five Scottish companies involved in a variety of sectors, said he was relishing the challenge of helping the Directors of Space Solutions to drive the business forward.

He said: “I have been very impressed at what I have already seen at Space Solutions.

“It is well managed with a strong Board – exampled by the fact that it has performed solidly through the recession, something that very few companies in the property sector can rival.

“My role will be to assist the Board with its overall strategy and business planning – and to identify acquisition opportunities.

“One key task will be to support the company’s growth plans by focusing on developing the success of its business centres in the central belt and North East and in targeting expansion into London.

“The company historically is an Aberdeen headquartered business and while the North East continues to perform well, the central belt divisions in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Livingston have enjoyed some impressive growth in recent years. The potential for further success is immense.”

A former Lay Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, Malcolm is currently Chairman of the Scottish Football Association Appeals Committee and Vice Chairman of the Scottish Solicitors' Discipline Tribunal.

Space Solutions, which completed a management buy-out in July 2007, is Scotland’s biggest independent expert in helping businesses manage changes within the workplace. It operates UK-wide – from bases in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Livingston – to design, build, fit out, refurbish and relocate modern and productive business environments.

Managing Director Steve Judge said: “While we have enjoyed another year of continued growth and increased turnover, we realised that to accelerate our plans for the business we needed to make a step change in our strategic thinking.

“We are delighted that Malcolm has agreed to join the Board. He is not just a leading figure in the legal world, but has a wealth of experience and impressive credentials in supporting business to grow and develop.

“The Directors and I are looking forward to Malcolm’s advice and support as we look to drive our growth, as well as receiving his invaluable guidance on developing our workforce, service delivery and client management. We are already looking at acquisition in London which will allow to take forward our plans to develop the business in the South East.

“It is a significant step for the Directors to appoint the Space Solutions’ first Chairman – it underlines our strong commitment to the future of the company.

“We believe we are now better placed than ever to drive our current successes forward to make Space Solutions a powerful force in the Scottish property sector.”
