St. Martin lantern walk

On Friday, November 11th, children from the Rocking Horse Nursery of the University of Aberdeen will carry their self-made lanterns around Old Aberdeen's King's College quadrangle to celebrate St. Martin's day.

For the 4th year in succession staff members at the University of Aberdeen have organised a lantern parade which are part of European-wide celebrations for St. Martin, a former Roman soldier turned monk. The most repeated story about his life describes how he impulsively cut his own military coat to share with a beggar at the city gates of Amiens.

To celebrate this act of generosity, children of the University's nursery will carry their self-made candle lit lanterns following a horse-backed "saint" through the streets of Old Aberdeen singing songs about St. Martin and the lanterns they carry. Music lecturer Frauke Jurgensen on her horse Benji will take the role of the Saint to lead the procession to King's Chapel, where she will re-enact the sharing of the coat with a "beggar".

The procession will start with some mulled wine and biscuits at the Rocking Horse Nursery on Friday, November 11th around 17.15. Everybody is welcome to join this atmospheric event. For further information contact Gabi Wagner 07891879240 or g.wagner@abdn.ac.uk.
