Stonehaven Open Air Pool to re-open next week

Stonehaven Open Air Pool will open to the public next week subject to the satisfactory completion of water tests at the popular leisure attraction.

The opening of the pool was delayed last week following the detection of hydrocarbons in the water.

The pool was subsequently emptied and has now been refilled and is being reheated. A number of tests have been carried out and there are no hydrocarbons present in the water.

Nevertheless, a further series of tests will be carried out this week and subject to their satisfactory completion the pool will be open for business on Thursday, June 9.

Staff are also hopeful that they may be able to open on Wednesday June 8, though will not be able to confirm this until the day – in which case entry will be free. However, please contact the indoor pool to check it is open before making the journey on (01569) 763162.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Sports and Leisure Manager, Tim Stephen, said: “The final tests at the pool will be carried out this week and we hope to receive the green-light to open early next week.

“If we can open the pool on Wednesday entry will be free for everyone who comes along. Staff at the pool next week and will be able to advise if it is open on Wednesday and thereafter we hope to be open for business as normal on Thursday.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and although it was disappointing to delay the opening of the pool we would assure customers that everything possible is being done to ensure the highest levels of water quality and ensure people's safety."

Friends of Stonehaven Open Air Pool chairman Mike Robins, said: “A lot of work has gone into making sure the pool can re-open as soon as possible and our volunteers, together with council officers, have been pulling out all the stops to make it happen.

“We hope the pool can open on Wednesday so people can enjoy a free day’s swimming at the facility and residents are advised to check with staff at the indoor pool for an update.”
