Student Awards Ceremony to Feature New Commemorative Prize

Students within Robert Gordon University's Department of Communication, Marketing and Media are set to be awarded industry prizes in recognition of their success on Friday 15 July 2011.

The ceremony, which will recognise the achievements of students across a variety of disciplines at both under and postgraduate levels within the department, will feature a new prize donated by the parents of Cameron Walker - a media student who sadly passed away at the beginning of the academic year (September 2010).

The inaugural Cameron Richard Walker par excellence award for Best Year 4 Media Student will be split between two of Cameron's closest fellow students and friends - Philip Petrie and Michael Dowds.

Philip was particularly close to Cameron, having been best friends through secondary school and university. Concerning his selection for the accolade, he

said:

"Winning this award has been such a great honour. Having been best friends with Cameron for so long it has been a very difficult final year to complete without him, however this award allows his name and his great passion for film and media to live on for years to come.

"My achievements during this final year are no doubt largely due to Cameron's influence and winning this award has been a very bittersweet experience, tinged with both feelings of pride and sadness. I hope for years to come Cameron's name will become synonymous with future media students who shared his talent and passion."

Cameron, who was set to graduate this summer, was last year selected as the recipient of the AVC Media Enterprises Year 3 Media Studies Prize. His parents, who will attend this year's prize-giving, will collect a posthumous degree in Cameron's memory at a graduation ceremony held at His Majesty's Theatre on the afternoon of Thursday 14 July.

Cameron's father, Richard, said: "This award is a great way of remembering Cameron and his life's achievements. We would as a family like to thank the university for this chance to present the award. Cameron enjoyed his time at the university and felt it gave him a good foundation for his future career. It is therefore quite fitting to reward future generations of students who are following in his footsteps"

Professor Rita Marcella, Dean of Aberdeen Business School, will introduce the awards on the day, before handing over to Jo Royle, Head of the Department of Communication, Marketing & Media. Jo will present the prizes to the top students from undergraduate and postgraduate courses from across the department.

Professor Marcella praised the students on their success: "I would like to congratulate all award winners for their achievements. Their creativity, academic rigour and the highest standards of professional competency are primary among the reasons for their selection. The awards are an important element of the Aberdeen Business School experience as they demonstrate the high regard in which our students are held by the communication and media industries alike."
