Student Sit-in Enters Fifth Day

Students occupying the University of Aberdeen today pledged to remain over the weekend, calling on the University principal to speak out against changes to lecturers’ pension schemes and to turn down his bonus.

The students occupied the University offices on Monday afternoon and have stayed since. Around fifty students spent the night in the occupation last night and say that they have a series of lectures and workshops. “Lecturers have been coming in and thanking us for our support by giving lectures, talks and workshops,” said Kadri Vilgats, a 21 year old Anthropology student. “More and more new students have been coming along every day to see what’s going on and we’ve been getting fantastic support.”

Students met with the University principal today, but say that they left the meeting unsatisfied.

“The principal is saying the right things around education funding, but his refusal to budge on pensions or bonuses is disappointing. The reforms are unfair and unnecessary, and the principal needs to break rank and speak out against them, and we’re willing to stay until he does,” said Gordon Maloney, a 21 year old linguistics student who has been sleeping in the occupation since the first day.
