Students head for Estonia

University of Aberdeen students are heading off to Estonia today (June 30) for the second cultural exchange of its kind.

The eight second and third year students fly to the East European country where they will stay in a summer camp just outside the capital Tallinn.

University teaching fellow Dr John Baird has organised the three week trip. He said: “This is the second year we have placed students in Estonia and we’re doing it again because the first year was such a success.

“The trip has several aims although the main one involves teaching conversational English to school children.

“But it is also a cultural exchange with students promoting Scotland and the University of Aberdeen as well as finding out more about the East European culture.”

It is hoped that the trip will also help bolster students’ career prospects.

Dr Baird added: “The students will have to learn how to deal with working practices that differ from those in the UK.

“They will also be expected to develop and deliver their own lessons, outside of their degree subject, for students whose first language is not English.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for the visitors who will be working with school pupils from many Eastern European countries including Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Lithuania, Ukraine and Belarus.”
