STUDENTS LAUNCH POSTER COMPETITION FOR TORCHER PARADE

Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign is holding a poster competition to find a winning design for this years’ annual Torcher Parade.

The Torcher Parade is an annual family favourite which brings together the students in Aberdeen and the local community.

The annual Torcher Parade has been running in Aberdeen for over 100 years and features over 40 decorated floats built by students and parades through Aberdeen City Centre as a finale to Charities’ Fortnight.

The parade raises over £7,000 which contributes to a total of over £90,000 which is disbursed to local and national charities by Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign.

To reflect this, the Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign is inviting youngsters in the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire areas to submit a design for this year’s historic event.

The winning entry will be used to advertise the parade to the local community and displayed across the city and published whenever official marketing is required.

The competition is open to all 5-14 year olds and the only rule is to make sure that entrants have fun with their design – the funnier the better! Entries should include “Torcher Parade, Saturday 28th April 2012” and include the campaign’s mascot, Angus the Bull, somewhere in the design.

The competition closes on the 19th of February and the winner will be picked by a judging panel and announced by the 9th of March. The winner will receive a goody bag of parade merchandise, a ride on the lead float and their work credited. 2 runners-up will receive a goody bag of merchandise.

Sean O’Rourke, President for Charities at Aberdeen University Students’ Association said:

“This is an excellent opportunity for the parade to become even more engrained into the community. This parade is iconic to the Students’ Charities Campaign and there is nothing else quite like it in the UK. This is a chance for local children to learn about their local heritage and about one of the things that makes Aberdeen such a great community for all.”

All entries to be submitted on A4 paper, with contact details on a separate piece of paper, and sent to:
