Talisman funds second youth development project at Transition Extreme.Sixteen young people from two Aberdeen secondary schools are set to participate in round two of a successful youth development project led by Transition Extreme Sports Centre and funded by leading North Sea oil and gas operator Talisman Energy (UK) Limited. Pupils from Bucksburn and Northfield Academy will begin the programme on Tuesday 19th January. The unique opportunity focuses on a key transition for any young person - the successful adjustment from primary to secondary school.
Over the next three months the pupils will try a combination of skateboarding, BMX, inline skating, indoor rock climbing and martial arts – all available at Transition Extreme. Sessions in the centre will be utilised to capture the young person’s imagination, improve health and general wellbeing and form a platform from which they can learn a range of other “life skills” such as social interaction, and respect for other people’s needs.
The project also includes an engaging small business assignment which is designed to allow the young person to recognise the link between school work and real life situations - creating a sense of involvement, achievement and accountability for their actions, as well as reinforcing the importance of team work.
During the first round which ended last May, a group of young people from Kincorth, St Machar and Torry Academy organised an open day at Transition named “Mission at Transition”. The event included free access to all facilities at Transition Extreme along with a BBQ, bungee run, live music and face painting.
Tim Rankin, Transition’s Centre Manager said: “We are delighted to host another Teenage Transition programme. The first round was a very rewarding experience for all involved. The group organised one of Transition’s most successful events with well over 200 people visiting the centre.
“The project presents a great opportunity for participants to meet new people and forge new friendships; broadening social networks and increase confidence and capacity. The continued success of this project is now down to the hard work and determination of the young people involved.”
