TAQA AND GE OIL & GAS WIN BASKETBALL CHALLENGE IN ABERDEEN CORPORATE DECATHLON

Beacon Basketball Club hosted the final event in the Aberdeen Corporate Decathlon. The Basketball Challenge sponsored by Apache was held on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th October at the Beacon Centre in Bucksburn. With everything to play for in both leagues the competition was fierce, with an air of electricity surrounding teams as they arrived for the challenge!

Although it was a cloudy morning in Aberdeen, the atmosphere was scorching inside the centre as the pool stages began and teams battled to win those all-important decathlon points! GE Oil & Gas, Shell, BP, Wood Group, Apache, CLAN, TAQA and PwC in Leagues 1 and 2, all made it through to the final stages of the tournament after breezing through the pool stages with strong performances throughout but it wasn’t enough to make it into the Grand Final!

As ever it was an intense Grand Final in League 1, with GE Oil & Gas and Wood Group battling it out after both teams gave commendable performances all through the tournament. In the end it was GE Oil & Gas who came out victorious with a couple of baskets in the dying few minutes of the game and become champions with a 34-25 win.

In League 2, the Grand Final was just as exhilarating with activitymix’s Charity Sponsor for 2011 CLAN and TAQA giving their all up until the last minutes of the game to win and take one step closer to becoming League 2 Champions! In the end it was TAQA who took first place winning with a score of 37-21.

Apache were sponsors of this weekend’s Basketball Challenge and walked away with the 3rd place trophy for League 2 .

Craig Costello, Production Engineering Supervisor & Basketball Captain for Apache said, ‘Thanks to all those who participated on both Saturday and Sunday. Both days were fiercely, but also fairly, competitive days with great shows of sportsmanship on all sides. Congratulations to both GE and TAQA, achieving well deserved wins’.

As it currently stands, in League 1 Wood Group are in first place, CNR International in second place and Shell in third place. In League 2 PwC are in first place, TAQA in second place and Champion Technologies in third place, however with the results from the Personal Health Challenge still to be revealed the competition is far from decided. These results will be revealed at the Sports Ball at AECC on Friday 28th October!
