The Impending US Departure from Iraq

A large protest by Sadrist supporters is expected in central Baghdad on 9 September. They are demanding the removal of US troops by the end of the year and redistribution of oil wealth.

Personnel, particularly foreigners, are advised to minimise travel and should expect delays in the districts between Sadr City and Karradah, with a likely gathering around main squares in the central Rusafah area.

Many Sadrist supporters are opposed to the foreign military presence still in the country. US troops are currently due to leave the country by 31 December. Some are concerned that the departure could create a security gap which militant groups may try to exploit.

Levels of violence have declined in Iraq over the past week. There were no incidents recorded in Baghdad at all on 7 September.

Companies considering the country as a potential investment location can take reassurance from the fact that conditions have improved in the country over recent years.

However, security and safety issues still need to be considered and many will be watching to see if the US departs by the end of the year.
