Trading standards staff gearing up for bonfire night

Trading Standards at Aberdeenshire Council are once again offering advice and assistance to local retailers to help ensure a safe fireworks season.

Retailers have an important role in ensuring the safe storage of fireworks, and they must be vigilant in ensuring they don’t sell fireworks to those under 18.

Trading Standards staff will be carrying out visits in coming weeks to make sure retailers have the necessary checks in place to prevent illegal sales.

This will be followed up by an undercover test purchasing exercise to ensure their procedures are working.

Wilma Urquhart, Trading Standards Manager said: “We had a good response from retailers last year, with all but one refusing to sell to a 16-year-old during our test purchase exercise.

“I appreciate it can be difficult to accurately assess the age of a young person and I would urge them to adopt a ‘No ID, no sale’ policy.”

Trading standards officers are happy to offer any advice or assistance and can be contacted on 01467 628323 or 01346 510505.
