Vandals cause thousands of pounds of damage to Aberdeen play parkVandals have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a popular Aberdeen park by setting fire to play equipment. The incident happened on Wednesday [02 November] evening at the Eric Hendrie Park in Springhill Road. The facility was maintained by Aberdeen City Council but it was funded by a local community group.
It is understood rubbish placed beneath a climbing frame was set alight leaving the structure badly damaged. A bench was also damaged. It could cost up to £10,000 to replace the play equipment and several hundred pounds to replace the bench.
Aberdeen City Council environment manager Steven Shaw said: “This appears to have been a mindless act of vandalism which has left a popular park practically unusable. This was a community-funded park and the local folk pulled together to secure the relevant grants and funding. I am extremely saddened by this incident but am thankful that it did not result in any injuries.”
Housing and Environment Committee convener Councillor Aileen Malone added: “To say this is a major blow for the community is an understatement. This was a valued and well-used park that was only made possible in the first place through the hard work of local residents who worked together to provide these facilities. I am sure the community will feel wholly disappointed with whoever is responsible.”
Grampian Police are aware of the incident and officers are making inquiries. Anyone with information is asked to call 0845 600 5700 or the charity Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 where calls will be dealt with anonymously. 74 views
