Viscom leads the way with landmark 3D stereoscopic corporate video

Health Safety Environment and Quality (HSEQ) media specialist Viscom has become the first British company to produce a 3D stereoscopic programme for the oil and gas industry, after filming on an offshore platform, which is believed to be a world first.

Viscom is already a leading provider of HSEQ and corporate videos worldwide - particularly to the offshore energy sector — and the creation of 3DS content signifies a real advancement in their capabilities.

The Viscom crew filmed for several days on TAQA Bratani’s Tern Alpha platform for the presentation focusing on TAQA’s North Sea operations.

The completed 3D presentation was premiered at this year’s Offshore Europe with a longer educational version installed at Aberdeen's Maritime Museum in a purpose-built 3D theatre. The techniques used to capture and show the images are almost identical to those employed for a 3D cinema feature film.

General Manager Bruce Milne said: "It was a very challenging assignment, particularly as our offshore trips coincided with periods of bad weather, but they were very fruitful, and demonstrated the benefits of 3DS for any client, not just for those operating offshore.

“We’ve always embraced new technology and having seen what can be done using 3DS, we’re convinced it will give any presentation a significant edge.

“The opportunities for reinforcing health and safety messages are huge, because it will allow the audience to become immersed in highly realistic scenarios. 3DS presents a vivid picture of the environment that is as close to ‘being there’ as you can get, and provides a ‘wow’ factor which really helps viewers engage. 3DS is actually more affordable than is generally believed and with the expertise we gained we can now offer it as a service to clients with more modest budgets."
