What are VQ's?

What are SVQs?

Scottish Vocational Qualifications are based on standards of competence, designed by Sector Skills Councils (SSC), in partnership with industry and awarding bodies.  They relate to a candidate's practical ability to work in real conditions, and to a degree of competence over time that reflects the standards on which the SVQ is based.

There are five levels of SVQ, whose definitions are as follows.

  • Level 1  basic, routine and repetitive work skills
  • Level 2  broad range of skills including non-routine activities and individual responsibility
  • Level 3  supervisory skills
  • Level 4  management skills
  • Level 5  senior management skills

Fully Funded VQ's

Fully funded places in Business & Administration, Customer Service

We all strongly believe that young people should have the opportunity to continue their individual learning experiences after the age of 16, and the Scottish Government has indicated their full support of this, by making available an increase in Modern Apprenticeship funding for 2011-12, to encourage and increase the number of young people taking up workplace education and training.

AGCC has a number of fully funded places in Business & Administration for those in the 16-19 (start up to 20th birthday) age group.  These fully funded places include Modern Apprenticeships, which provide people in employment with the opportunity to work towards an industry recognised and accredited qualification.

Additional places are available in Customer Service, while Management & Leadership offers further places for candidates in the 20+ category, who work in key industry sectors.

Attractive commercial rates are offered for Chamber members, where funding is not currently available.

AGCC is widely acknowledged for delivering quality training to member companies, and the VQ Team likewise, has an excellent track record in assisting individuals to achieve their learning and development ambitions.

Modern Apprenticeships

Modern Apprenticeships are training programmes aimed at developing highly skilled employees.  They are available to any employee aged 16 or over - and there are various Modern Apprenticeship frameworks available in Scotland across a wide range of industry sectors.
They were introduced in Scotland in 1995, being a key part of the government's drive for greater competitiveness.  Modern Apprenticeships allow individuals to develop both their occupational and personal skills in a working environment, whilst ensuring they reach a common standard of competence and knowledge that is recognisable to the industry, as being a sound basis upon which a career can be developed.
These programmes also offer young people the opportunity to train for jobs at various levels within a company and are designed to help create a high-calibre work force, which will strengthen the training system throughout the United Kingdom. They are an exciting way of gaining skills and qualifications that will help individuals to start a career or develop an existing one, without having to study full-time.

We offer Modern Apprenticeships in Business & Administration and Customer Service.

Employer Recruitment Incentive

The Employer Recruitment Incentive

Up to £2,000 towards training and recruitment

As you know, recruiting and training new staff can be extremely difficult during an economic downturn.

Luckily, there’s help available with the Employer Recruitment Incentive from Skills Development Scotland. The Employer Recruitment Incentive is part of SDS’s package of support for business and is supported by the Scottish Government and the European Social Fund.

Businesses can access up to £2,000 when they take on someone as an employee or Modern Apprentice who has gone through one of SDS’s pre-employment programmes, such as Get Ready for Work.

There are two levels of incentive depending on the size of the company.

For companies with 50 to 250 employees, a £1,000 incentive is available, while businesses with fewer than 50 staff qualify for an additional £1,000.

Employers with more than 250 staff are eligible for £1,000 when they take on an under 18 who has experienced some barriers to work.

Click here to find out more and to watch a short film of how the Employer Recruitment Incentive has helped a small business take on a new recruit.

Getting involved couldn’t be easier. Just call SDS on 0800 783 6000 and we’ll guide you through the process from start to finish.
