Volunteers needed in fight against yellow prickly invader taking over Aberdeen nature reserveAberdeen City Council’s ranger service is seeking volunteers to take up loppers and saws to help bring an invasive plant at a city nature reserve under control. Gorse is threatening to take over many areas of valuable wet heathland at Scotstown Moor Local Nature Reserve, Bridge of Don.
Countryside ranger Robert Rowe said: “It is essential that we control the spread of gorse. This will allow more light to reach the ground and favour the heather and other colourful wild flowers. In turn butterflies, beetles, spiders and other insects will be attracted to the flowers in addition to birds looking for a ready meal."
The volunteer workday will take place on Saturday, 26 November. Anyone interested in getting involved is asked to meet at 10am in the Scotstown Moor car park which is located off Scotstown Road. The event will run until 3pm.
Tools, equipment and hot drinks will be provided for volunteers along with safety briefings. Everyone is welcome but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. The work areas will be sign posted from the car park in Scotstown Road and the Dubford Road entrance if you arrive after 10am.
For more information call the ranger service on 01224 897400 or 07802 323919.
