Walking for Charity

The Newburgh - Balmedie 'Sandwalk' will celebrate its fifth birthday this year when the annual charity fundraising trek takes place on Sunday the 21st August.

This family-friendly event has been steadily growing each year since it was introduced and the organisers, the Rotary Clubs of Aberdeen Balgownie and Ellon, hope it will once again attract hundreds of local folk keen to mix a bracing fresh air stroll with a chance to raise funds for good causes. In visually stunning settings, and passing close to the “greatest golf course in the world” under construction by Donald Trump, walkers will follow the beach for five miles from Newburgh to Balmedie to support four local charities in Aberdeen City and Shire; ERSKINE, CHAS, CLAN Cancer Support and Teen Challenge. ERSKINE provides accommodation and care for military veterans, CLAN supports all those affected by cancer, CHAS offers a hospice service for seriously-ill children and young people, and Teen challenge gives support and training for young people recovering from addictions.

Walkers can choose which charity or charities they wish to receive the money they raise through sponsorship. They check in at Balmedie Country Park on the Sunday morning and are then taken by bus to the start point in Newburgh for the trek back to Balmedie. A registration fee of £5 is payable on the day.

The Sandwalk organisers are sure that everyone can identify with at least one of these causes either directly or indirectly, and would encourage people to support them by taking part in a fun Sunday stroll that the whole family can participate in. They can register in advance and find more information at www.thesandwalk.co.uk
