Wood Group PSN pledges £100,000 to Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal

Wood Group PSN has made the first instalment of a £100,000 fundraising pledge to Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal. An initial donation of £25,000 was made after the energy services company outlined plans to adopt Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal as its UK charity for 2012.

The money will go towards a campaign to raise £3 million for a Maggie's Centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Wood Group PSN plans to support the appeal by undertaking a number of fundraising initiatives to raise a minimum of £100,000. From its headquarters in Aberdeen, the company will be encouraging its employees to fundraise by fund-matching pound for pound any money raised by its workforce. The initial donation of £25,000 marks this commitment and is designed to kick-start fundraising efforts.

Robin Watson, UK managing director for Wood Group PSN said:

“We recognise the vital importance of a Maggie’s Centre in Aberdeen and we are delighted to provide support to this very worthwhile appeal. One in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime and the support services that Maggie’s provides to individuals, and their families is literally life changing.

“Wood Group PSN employs over 7500 people in the UK, a large number of who live and work in the Grampian region. We have a duty to support this cause and will be working continuously to promote the Centre and encourage other businesses we work with to show their support. I am confident we can raise even more than our target.”

Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal is an ambitious fundraising campaign to bring a Maggie's Centre to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for families affected by cancer across North East Scotland.

Aberdeen is the only NHS cancer site in Scotland not supported by a Maggie’s Centre. Run by clinically trained cancer professionals and operating a combined programme of care based on medical evidence and peer support, Maggie’s Aberdeen expects to care for up to 40% of all new people diagnosed with cancer by the time the centre is five years old.

Maggie’s is for people with every type of cancer, their care providers, family and friends and will provide sustained benefits for a population of over 577,000 people in Grampian, Orkney and Shetland by delivering a highly personalised, free, comprehensive, accessible, confidential cancer care service.

Colin Welsh, chairman of Monty’s Maggie’s Appeal said:

“The commitment from everyone at Wood Group PSN is a significant boost towards delivering this landmark project for the community, and will allow us to start building the Centre in 2012 on the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary campus.”
