Helping delegates become more effective directors and develop within their role. We will provide the basic tools to undertake the role through group exercises, networking, hand-outs and recommended reading. This will include an introduction to the legal duties and responsibilities of directors which need to be clearly understood as part and parcel of all board decision-making. The workshop explores the collective responsibilities of the Board of directors and the roles which the Chair, CEO, Company Secretary, Executive and non- executive directors undertake. As the role becomes more onerous it is vital that all Directors receive adequate training to fulfil their duties and become more effective.

Who is it for?
This one-day workshop is designed for the newly-appointed director or those withour any formal training or aspiring to become directors in the future.
Although primarily aimed at the for-profit, private company director this workshop will be of relevance to the director/Trustee within the not for profit sector.
The workshop will be of special relevance to the manager about to be appointed to their first role on the Board.
The Workshop Facilitator
The workshop is led by Michael Willis who has mentored and advised a wide range of clients and actively listens and explores ideas with his mentees rather than jumping to conclusions and pre-judging the situation. Formerly the Head of Board Development with the Institute of Directors in Scotland. He tutored on a variety of open programmes including the role of the non-executive director, the Apprentice Director, the Role of the Chair and Winning Board Behaviours. He designed these programmes and over 600 delegates have successfully completed them as part of their director development. He is an advisor to a wide range of organisations in a variety of corporate settings in the public, private and charitable sectors. He has experience of improving the performance of boards and undertaking independent board evaluations. A graduate in Economics he has worked in the marketing function with Reckitt & Colman and the Electronics Rental Group as well as spending 6 years at Durham University Business School and the University of Stirling where he published several books and articles. He served as Head of Corporate Services with the Scottish Development Agency before returning to industry in 1990. He was formerly the CEO of a global enclosure business supplying the electronics industry before the sale of the company in 2001. His style is relaxed, constructive and wide ranging which reflects his eclectic mix of Board experience. He has co-authored ‘Faith in Governance – renewing the Role of the Director’ (2004) and ‘The Resilient Director – Building the Effective Board’ (2015)
