The Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development states that ‘Diversity & Inclusion is about creating an environment and practices where people can be themselves and be supported to work at their best.’
Yes, employers can establish the foundations or policies to support diversity and inclusion but what about the role of the employee and indeed other stakeholders in facilitating your workplace being diverse and inclusive.
                     
Whilst most employers recognise the benefits of having a diverse and inclusive workplace as well as seeking to avoid the negative impact of  discrimination just how much organisations fully understand what influences and impact this aspiration in less clear. Training in areas such as unconscious bias; the benefits and challenges of achieving a diverse and inclusive workforce would be beneficial for the bottom line and reputation.
 
Bias can and does happen automatically and is triggered by our brain making quick judgements and assessments of people, situations and influenced by our background, cultural environment and personal experiences and preferences. Unconscious Bias is therefore likely to be influencing decisions by everyone in the workplace resulting in possible discriminatory situations and a barrier to attaining that desired diverse and inclusive work environment.
