Bob Dewar, partner, Williams Mullen
Mike Churchill, chief executive, Churchill Drilling Tools
The United States is the largest, most competitive and technologically advanced economy in the world, and the UK’s largest single export market.

Educated in Scotland, Bob Dewar now lives and works in the US for law firm Williams Mullen. He talks about the issues facing Scottish companies starting or expanding a business in the United States, particularly the forms of business entity that are available.

In 2015, the UK exported goods and services worth over £45billion to the US.  The sheer size and vast cultural differences across the regions make the US market a fascinating and diverse place for UK exporters.

Mike Churchill gives a flavour of his company’s experience in exporting downhole tools to the Gulf of Mexico.

A common language, large market and strong cultural connections mean the US should be one of the easiest markets to enter, but Churchill Drilling Tools took seven years before a viable business was established.

Overcoming guns, lawsuits and the mundane everyday export challenges, the region is now one of Churchill’s principal profit generators.
