Speakers:
Maggie Bochel & Pippa Robertson, Aurora Planning
Ross Grant, Senior Project Manager, Aberdeen Inspired
Russell Borthwick, Chief Executive, Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce

Planning impacts on where people live and work, how they move around, the value of property, the quality of the environment, the sustainability of communities and our economy and, ultimately, the quality of people’s lives.  As such, how the planning system works and people’s ability to interact effectively with that system is crucial to all of us.  In 2015 the then Minister responsible for planning announced a root and branch review of the planning system in Scotland and, after extensive consultation with a wide range of stakeholders, the Planning (Scotland) Bill was introduced to Parliament in December 2017.  Since then it has been subject to a record number of amendments, with a final round of parliamentary scrutiny due prior to the Bill coming into force.   Maggie and Pippa from Aurora Planning Limited will outline some of the most significant proposals in the Bill and, drawing on their extensive experience in both the public and private sectors, will discuss what the Bill could mean for development in the north east.

Ross Grant has worked at Aberdeen Inspired since 2013 and one of the flagship projects that he is credited with bringing to the city is Nuart Aberdeen. Now in its third iteration, the festival is critically acclaimed having won national and international accolades in placemaking and tourism. Ross will take delegates behind the scenes of the festival to highlight what makes the festival happen, and what’s involved in securing walls.

Russell joined the Chamber in February 2016. He was previously managing partner at the Newcastle office of a global marketing agency network, regional managing director for Trinity Mirror’s North-East newspaper publishing division as well as founding his own marketing & communications consultancy Press Ahead, which he ran for nearly a decade.   Originally from Aberdeen, Russell returned to the city after an absence of more than 20 years, having started his career with the Press & Journal.  He is passionate about the success of the area and sees AGCC as having a key role in helping to position our city region as an even better place to live, work, study, visit, invest and do business.

Russell will present on how the region has responded well to the economic challenges posed by the downturn of 2015-2017.  So where are we now and what are the opportunities and risks as we seek to maintain the positive progress towards our renaissance region vision?
