The Vanguard initiative aims to provide a platform for community-minded people to have a meaningful role in designing the future of our region: the renaissance vision.

It is made up of a mix of individuals who give their time, expertise and, most importantly, enthusiasm towards challenging conventional thinking and approaches; and making good things happen in the region that otherwise would not, creating an amazing legacy for future generations.

Since the first call for volunteers in 2017 it has seen people from a diverse range of backgrounds pool their collective knowledge, skills and ideas to devise, shape and deliver a raft of groundbreaking projects addressing some of the real economic challenges facing the North-east.

From the imagination-grabbing plans to launch a cable car connecting Aberdeen beach and the city centre, or create new green spaces in which to enjoy our fantastic environment; to boosting local businesses through Google-mapping and securing a dedicated full-time role to promote the North-east as a hub for the life sciences sector – it’s been a busy three years.

The volunteers are currently exploring a number of projects focused around four central themes:

1. An exciting future vision for our city and town centres

2. Creating an amazing region to live in and visit

3. Promoting local provenance, produce and trade

4. Enabling the physical and mental wellbeing of our residents

The teams are currently developing ideas ahead of conference at the end of the year when they will pitch their projects to an audience of peers and influencers, as well as provide an update on existing project progress. Details of how to attend will be shared soon.
