My first year at NMC has been incredibly busy and fulfilling. As a growing company with a highly proficient team, I’ve had the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals, while making meaningful contributions right from this early stage in my career.
Why NMC?
I joined NMC Energy in May 2025 as a Project Co-ordinator. I wanted to apply my previous experience as a graduate engineer in wind energy to the decommissioning sector. NMC’s established reputation in this field was a huge draw for me, along with the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects and gain exposure across engineering, project management and offshore operations.
Collaboration and co-ordination
Over the course of the last year I have been involved in several major offshore decommissioning projects, including work on Spirit Energy asset decommissioning activities.
Gaining first-hand exposure at the heart of project engineering and co-ordination activities has given me a much deeper understanding of the wider decommissioning project lifecycle.
One of my key responsibilities has been maintaining and co-ordinating project risk registers for the Spirit Energy projects, which has helped me develop a greater understanding of risk management, project controls and the decision-making processes within complex offshore projects.
Through regular collaboration and co-ordination across multi-disciplinary teams, and interacting with experienced engineers and project managers I have gained valuable insights into how technical, commercial and regulatory considerations come together to deliver successful projects.
Highlights so far…
One of the highlights of my first year was completing my first offshore trip. I had the opportunity to work alongside an experienced team delivering critical decommissioning activities involving pipeline flushing and venting operations in the North Sea.
As well as providing first-hand exposure to offshore execution, this trip gave me the chance to witness how planning and engineering work undertaken onshore is translated into safe and efficient offshore operations. I was particularly interested in the implementation of safety measures as this directly related to my risk management role across all the Spirit Energy projects.
The whole experience was hugely beneficial, enhancing my understanding of project delivery, offshore safety, operational planning and collaboration between offshore and onshore teams.
Accelerating professional development
As a graduate, I have really appreciated all of the opportunities that NMC have presented me with in my first year. I’ve also benefitted from joining NMC as the company has been on its own growth journey, and enjoyed contributing to its ongoing expansion and success. As we are a smaller company, I’ve been fortunate enough to work across different departments, and gain experience from a wide range of specialisms, while working on live projects.
The supportive and knowledge-sharing culture within NMC has played a key role in my development, and instilled in me the confidence to take on increasing responsibility. Without a doubt this ethos of collaboration, planning and proactive problem-solving has been instrumental in my professional development.
What’s next?
My goal is to continue gaining experience and building my expertise in project engineering and project management in the energy sector, particularly across offshore decommissioning and integrated energy projects.
I’m passionate about exploring the potential for new innovative products and solutions to expedite and streamline the execution of decommissioning operations.
I’m also working towards becoming chartered in the project management role. Longer term, I hope to progress into a Project Manager role, leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex projects that support the future of the energy industry.
