From a hospitality perspective, we're now just six months away from the festive season and, perhaps surprisingly, Christmas planning is already well underway for many organisations across the North-east.
At The Aberdeen Altens Hotel and The Aberdeen Dyce Hotel, we welcomed more than 4,000 guests across Christmas party nights and Hogmanay celebrations during the 2025 festive season. Alongside packed dance floors, festive dining and sold-out events, it also provided a fascinating insight into how businesses are approaching celebrations and how planning habits continue to evolve.
As we reach the halfway point to Christmas 2026, here are some of the biggest lessons we learned.
Businesses Are Planning Earlier Than Ever
Perhaps the most noticeable trend is how much earlier organisers are beginning conversations.
Traditionally, many businesses would start seriously considering Christmas plans towards the end of summer. Increasingly, however, we're seeing organisations secure dates much earlier in the year.
Why? Quite simply, it removes pressure later on. By securing a venue and date early, one significant task can be confidently ticked off the list before workloads begin to increase.
We're already seeing this trend continue for Christmas 2026, with enquiries and bookings arriving earlier than we've experienced in previous years.
Shared Party Nights Continue to Thrive
Another interesting observation from 2025 was the continued popularity of shared Christmas party nights.
While some organisations prefer exclusive events, many businesses are looking for a festive celebration that combines atmosphere, entertainment and ease of organisation.
Shared events allow smaller teams to enjoy the energy of a larger celebration without the responsibility of organising an entire event themselves. For many businesses, it provides the ideal balance between convenience and experience.
Teams Still Value Time Together
The workplace continues to evolve, with hybrid working, flexible schedules and dispersed teams becoming increasingly common. As a result, opportunities for colleagues to spend time together away from day-to-day work can be more valuable than ever.
One thing that stood out throughout the festive season was how important these events remain for bringing people together. For many organisations, the Christmas party is one of the few occasions during the year where entire teams can relax, celebrate achievements and enjoy each other's company outside the workplace.
Experience Matters More Than Ever
Today's organisers are looking beyond simply booking a meal. Increasingly, they are considering the complete experience, including entertainment, atmosphere, accommodation options, ease of planning, parking and accessibility.
Guests have high expectations of their celebrations, and organisers understandably want confidence that the evening will run smoothly and create positive memories for their teams.
From our perspective, reliability and consistency are becoming just as important as the event itself.
Organisers Want Simplicity
One final lesson from hosting more than 4,000 guests is that organisers value simplicity.
Clear communication, straightforward booking processes, flexible payment options and having a dedicated point of contact all help reduce the workload for those responsible for arranging events.
The organisers who seem to enjoy the process most are often those who start planning early, ask questions and keep things as simple as possible.
Looking Ahead
While Christmas may still feel some distance away, many organisations are already quietly making plans for the festive season ahead. More choice, less pressure and greater peace of mind are lessons that seem to resonate with organisers year after year. And if recent festive seasons are anything to go by, those early conversations are becoming more important than ever.
