This month, ROSEN UK was proud to see Integrity Engineer Connor Munroe present at SPE Topsides UK, where he delivered a presentation titled “Enhancing Small Bore Tubing (SBT) Integrity to Minimise Hydrocarbon Leaks and Unplanned Shutdowns.” His presentation showcased a proactive and structured approach to strengthening SBT integrity across both offshore and onshore assets.

Held at The Chester Hotel in Aberdeen, SPE Topsides UK brought together operators, engineers, and industry specialists to explore the latest innovations and challenges across topsides engineering. The event provided an ideal platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, with a strong focus on improving asset integrity, operational efficiency, and safety performance across the energy sector.

Why Small Bore Tubing Matters

Small Bore Tubing assemblies play a critical role in connecting instrumentation that supports monitoring, control, and overall operational safety. Yet, despite their importance, SBT systems are often overlooked within integrity management programmes. Data from the UK Health and Safety Executive’s Hydrocarbon Release Database continues to show that instrument-related leaks, many reaching significant severity, remain a persistent challenge. A notable portion of these originate from SBT failures caused by poor installation, mechanical damage, vibration fatigue, or ineffective maintenance regimes.

ROSEN UK‘s approach

Connor explored how ROSEN’s methodology integrates inspection findings with robust engineering assessment, using a dedicated risk matrix to evaluate both probability and consequence of failure. This ensures operators can prioritise remedial actions effectively and in alignment with regulatory expectations and Energy Institute guidance. ROSEN also supports clients in enhancing internal standards, procedures, and work practices to strengthen long-term SBT management.

Connor holds a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from Robert Gordon University and gained operator-side experience before joining ROSEN’s Integrity Services in Aberdeen three years ago. As part of the Upstream Team, he supports a wide range of projects covering operational integrity, corrosion, materials, welding, and subsea design. He has been a consistent contributor to ROSEN’s SBT integrity work throughout his time with the company.

Industry Perspective

Gordon Blair, Upstream Business Development Manager at ROSEN UK commented, “SBT is a discipline that is often overlooked, yet it plays an integral role in ensuring topside efficiency and safety across offshore operations. Connor has taken the lead in highlighting its importance, most recently through a presentation that clearly demonstrated its value to key industry collaborators. His ability to combine technical expertise with strategic insight has positioned him as a strong leader in this space. We are pleased to see Connor driving forward SBT initiatives, establishing his knowledge and perspectives as part of the wider industry conversation. As a talented young engineer, he continues to prove himself as a key member of our offshore team in Aberdeen.”

Looking Ahead

The event was a great success, with Connor’s presentation generating strong engagement and discussion among attendees. ROSEN was pleased to contribute to the technical dialogue and looks forward to continuing to support industry efforts to improve SBT integrity and reduce hydrocarbon release risks across the UKCS and beyond.
