As an engineer, I’ve dedicated my career to solving problems. They don’t come much more rewarding than bringing the best digital connectivity to 100,000 homes and businesses in the North-east of Scotland, via one of Scotland’s biggest full fibre broadband infrastructure projects.
For too long areas like Aberdeenshire have lagged behind other areas in terms of essential connectivity, and GoFibre, working closely with government, is setting out to change that.
Proud to be a Scottish company, GoFibre is dedicated to bringing lightning-fast, gigabit-capable broadband to rural and harder-to-reach parts of the country.
As Chief Operating Officer at GoFibre, I’m leading the rollout of our Gigabit-capable broadband network across the north east of Scotland. We’ll be operating across some of Scotland’s most challenging terrain, but we have a highly experienced team with a strong track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects.
GoFibre is connecting 63,000 hard-to-reach premises across North East Scotland (Aberdeen City and Shire, Angus, Moray, Perth & Kinross, Dundee City and Highland) through Project Gigabit, a government-backed programme to supercharge internet access in mainly rural areas. Our commercially-funded build is topping that up to 100,000 premises in the region.
Project Gigabit is the UK Government’s programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband. The Scottish Government manages delivery of the programme in Scotland.
It’s an exciting time, as the first homes and businesses in the build can now get connected. We have already begun connecting customers in Aberdeenshire locations like Inverbervie and Auchenblae, with more to follow shortly in and around St Cyrus, Johnshaven, Laurencekirk and Stonehaven. Our full roll out will cover many more locations in the Aberdeenshire and Grampian region.
This major project is an essential part of securing the future economic prosperity of the north east of Scotland. Having access to the best digital connectivity available is essential to economic growth and quality of life for people living and working in this area.
The enthusiastic response our teams have had from communities and individuals – from home workers to small businesses owners – who need fast, reliable broadband to run their lives and earn a living, has been incredible.
There is a great feat of engineering underway from GoFibre and our partners to create this major piece of network infrastructure. Some of the terrain is the most challenging you will find anywhere for a build project like this, but our team has the experience in delivering major full fibre broadband infrastructure in areas of similar rurality – such as North Northumberland and Teesdale, where we have connected tens of thousands of properties to our network.
Seeing my team deliver this important connectivity upgrade which will underpin economic growth in a key region of Scotland, will be one of the proudest moments in my professional career.
