Modern life, and commerce, grinds to a halt without decent broadband.

Think about what you do on a daily basis when running your business, doing personal admin or relaxing at home, and just how much of it depends on your internet connection.  However, in rural and hard-to-reach areas, like much of Aberdeen and Grampian, a reliable gigabit-capable broadband connection can be even more of a challenge than in cities and suburbs.

The great news is that Scottish independent broadband provider GoFibre, supported by the UK and Scottish Governments, is helping to overcome this digital divide in the region.

GoFibre was founded in 2017 in the Scottish Borders expressly to improve rural broadband. Our network currently comprises over 126,000 premises, and, over the next four years, we will double that.

Last year was our most successful to date. Major contract wins, build completions, investment in the business and a rapidly growing customer base all helped to see us named as one of the top 10 fastest-growing companies in Scotland by the UK Fast Growth Index for 2025. Now, we’re bringing our lightning fast, ultra reliable, full fibre broadband to around 100,000 rural homes and businesses in North East Scotland.

Residents and businesses in areas, including Aberdeenshire, Angus, and Moray will be able to enjoy the same world-class broadband connectivity as Scotland’s major cities. This will enable seamless remote working, effortless streaming, smarter farmingand give local enterprises the tools to compete and grow.

Around 63,000 of the 100,000 premises will be connected to our full fibre broadband as part of joint efforts by the UK and Scottish governments to supercharge internet access in mostly rural areas. Project Gigabit is the UK government’s programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband. The Scottish Government manages delivery of the contracts in Scotland.

This latest contract is one of four that we are delivering for Project Gigabit, with the others being in Durham-Teesdale, Northumberland, and the Borders/East Lothian. In the North East, build is now underway in Stonehaven, St Cyrus, Laurencekirk, Auchenblae, Letham Angus and Longforgan, expanding our existing network of approximately 10,000 premises in Aberdeenshire and 15,000 premises in Angus.

As a broadband provider for rural areas, we have a strong, hyper-local focus and this approach extends beyond our customer service to investing in the communities where we build, helping to support local economies by hiring local people for our workforce. Our North East network construction will help unlock economic growth and create 30 local jobs directly during build, with up to 180 in total created across the lifetime of the contract, including through subcontractors.

For too long, people living and working in rural parts of the north east have had to put up with slow, unreliable broadband, but our full fibre broadband, with speeds of up to 1 Gbps, will change that, helping to make business owners’ and residents’ everyday working and personal lives much easier.
