TechFest is proud to introduce STEM on the Wind Farm, an exciting new initiative designed to give senior pupils across Scotland a hands-on introduction to one of our country’s most important growth sectors: renewable energy.

The project is kindly sponsored by Thistle Wind Partners and supported by Red Rocks Energy.

Building on the success of our long-established STEM in the Pipeline programme, this project challenges S5–S6 pupils to explore the real-world development of a wind farm — from initial concept through to full proposal.

Participating schools will register teams of up to six students, who will form a mock company and collaborate to design their own wind farm project. Reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the sector, students take on roles that mirror real industry functions as they work through processes including:

  • Site assessment and feasibility studies
  • Turbine selection and layout optimisation
  • Communications strategy and stakeholder engagement
  • Environmental considerations and permitting
  • Financial planning and project delivery

Each team will submit a written proposal and present their work at a final showcase event. Throughout the programme, we connect students with industry professionals who provide guidance and mentorship, offering invaluable insight into the breadth of STEM careers within the wind energy sector.

Our commitment

For over 40 years, TechFest has worked in partnership with employers, education providers, and communities to bridge the gap between education and industry. We design our programmes to be immersive, relevant, and impactful — empowering young people while supporting Scotland’s long-term economic growth.

During this pilot year (September–December), we anticipate engaging approximately 40 pupils across targeted regions of Scotland. The programme also creates meaningful opportunities for industry involvement, from mentoring and project support to participation in launch and showcase events.

Looking ahead

As Scotland strengthens its leadership in renewable energy, we believe initiatives like STEM on the Wind Farm are vital to developing the skilled workforce of the future.

We are currently collaborating with partner organisations to support the delivery of this pilot year. Engagement from across the business community will help us maximise the programme’s reach and impact — inspiring young people, strengthening education–industry links, and nurturing the next generation of talent for the energy sector.

We are also looking for sponsor organisations who would be interested in joining our project sponsor panel.

Our team would welcome conversations with organisations interested in being part of this exciting initiative and helping shape Scotland’s future workforce.
