In December 2026, I’ll be joining four teammates to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean – known as the World’s Toughest Row.
That’s not a phrase I take lightly. This challenge will push every limit – physically, mentally, emotionally. But for us, it’s not just about crossing an ocean. It’s about raising awareness and funds for three charities that are incredibly close to our hearts: Mind, Body & Sole, MND Scotland, and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
Having served in the Royal Navy as a marine engineer mechanic, I know the importance of camaraderie, discipline, and mental resilience. These values are woven into the DNA of our crew – five ordinary men aiming to achieve something extraordinary.
Remiges V, our team name, is Latin for "The Five Oarsmen" or "wing feathers" – a nod to unity, lift, and strength through teamwork. Every stroke we take will honour those facing their own battles: from veterans navigating civilian life, to individuals fighting motor neurone disease, to those quietly battling mental health challenges.
We’ve drawn inspiration from past teams like HMS Oardacious – and from people in our own lives who have shown true courage in the face of adversity. This row is our way of giving back, of making a statement, and of proving that great things can happen when people pull together for a cause.
But we can’t do this alone.
We’re currently seeking sponsors and partners to help bring our mission to life. Whether you’re a business looking for a unique CSR opportunity, a brand that shares our values, or someone who simply believes in the power of human spirit – we’d love to hear from you.
To put things into perspective, it costs £250 per day to feed our team of five. Over the course of the trip – including the required 50% food surplus in case of delays or emergencies – that’s approximately £15,000 just for meals. And that’s only one part of the overall cost.
In total, we estimate the full cost of the campaign at £200,000 – covering the boat, equipment, race fees, logistics, and training. To summarise the scale of what’s needed in the context of our local business community:
- If every member of the Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce (AGCC) donated just £10, the entire challenge would be funded.
Support from our community will help cover vital costs, raise the profile of our chosen charities, and most importantly, fuel the purpose that sits at the heart of this journey.
