Think you need to get fitter before you join a gym? You’re not alone.
Too many people tell us they think they need to have a certain level of fitness before they can join a class or step into the gym, but it’s far from true - there’s no fitness level needed to begin. Every fitness journey starts somewhere and taking that first step, whatever your age, experience or fitness level, is where you get fit.
This September, Sport Aberdeen is offering you the chance to build the foundations of a healthy, strong body now that future you will thank you for.
5 reasons to join Sport Aberdeen this September
Here are our top tips on why starting now could be one of the best things you ever do!
1. You don’t have to feel ready
Walking through the doors for the first time can feel like the hardest part.
But nobody expects you to arrive already knowing what to do, or to walk in feeling super fit and confident. Our instructors are here to meet you where you are, help you find the right classes or fitness options for you and make sure you feel comfortable from day one.
Because you’re only new the first time.
2. There’s something for everyone
Fitness doesn’t look the same for everyone and nor should it. Fitness is individual to each of us.
Whether you enjoy strength training, cardio, functional fitness, dance classes, group exercise or something gentler, there are plenty of ways to get moving across Sport Aberdeen’s facilities.
And there’s no pressure to do everything in classes as all the movements can be scaled to your own fitness level.
Our Get active @ Jesmond member Fiona Mortimer, 54, says she loves having options and the ability to adapt exercises, giving her more control over her workouts and a feeling of accomplishment.
“It’s not a case of ‘you’ve got to do it all’ as the instructors will give you plenty options depending on your fitness level and how you’re feeling.”
When she first joined Sport Aberdeen, Fiona never thought she’d be going to the gym four days a week. Now she is and she’s absolutely smashing it.
3. Confidence comes from doing
You might feel nervous about joining a class, using the machines on the gym floor or simply not knowing anyone.
But confidence grows by doing – not waiting.
Just ask the ‘Jesmond Golden Girls’, a group of members who’ve built much more than fitness at the gym.
Nicola Mackay, 63, says: “It’s such a friendly bunch of people with a mix of ages and abilities. We’re always encouraging and supportive of each other and any new members who join.”
And the inimitable Elizabeth (Betty) Evans, 73, says the friendships she’s made are one of the best things about being a Sport Aberdeen member.
“You don’t just come to the gym and see people – you make friends and form real lasting friendships.”
The group even makes sure every new face gets a friendly and welcoming hello along with some help with setting up any equipment for classes.
4. You’ll get more than a workout
Exercise can help you become stronger and fitter, but the benefits go beyond what happens during a workout.
Moving more can boost your mood, improve your confidence and give you a sense of achievement. Add in friendly instructors, familiar faces and a supportive community, and your gym can quickly become a home from home and a sanctuary you look forward to visiting.
As Nicola puts it, being part of the group is also “good for your mental wellbeing”.
5. You’ll wonder why you didn’t start sooner
Starting something new can feel like a big commitment.
But sometimes the biggest change starts with one small action - booking a class, stepping into the gym, or simply walking through the venue door for the first time.
Mark, 27, started strength training and Hyrox at Sport Aberdeen and wishes he’d started sooner.
“I wish I’d gone to the gym when I was overweight,” he says. “I’d say to anyone thinking about joining the gym to just go for it, it’s so worth it.”
Within weeks, you could be moving better, feeling stronger, sleeping better, and wondering why you waited so long.
