An Aberdeen restaurant has become the first business to back a charity initiative which provides a meal for a child in Kenya every time a customer enjoys a meal.

8848, the Union Street restaurant which serves authentic Nepalese and Indian cuisine, has signed up with Aberdeen-based charity Gathimba Edwards Foundation's 'Eat to Feed' initiative.

An optional 50 pence will be added to each customer's bill, with 8848 match funding donations. All funds raised through the initiative will go towards the three key focuses of the programme: monthly food packages, farming and school meals/fees support.

8848 Owner Krish Bhetuwal tells us why he was inspired to suggest the campaign to GEF:

"We consider it a great honour to participate in this endeavour as part of our CSR. There is no better sensation than this. When we serve lunch or dinner here at 8848, the same number of people are receiving meals in the other half of the world, especially at this challenging time. We are grateful for our helpful workers, clients, and other stakeholders. While you are at work, we have a sense of accomplishment."

GEF Co-Founder, Myles Edwards, explains the impact that 8848's support will have:

"At present, we aim to provide monthly food packages to 21 families who find themselves in various challenging situations. Several families care for children with disabilities, making it challenging for parents to earn a living. Some children are often looked after by older siblings due to their parents either having passed away or abandoning them. HIV impacts others, so specific nutritious foods are provided to help boost their immune systems.

"In addition to the monthly food packages, funds raised through 'Eat to Feed' will also go towards providing school meals and fees for children as well as the leasing of land and purchase of seeds & fertiliser for families to grow their food.

"We are incredibly grateful to the team at 8848 for this very kind and generous support. Krish is determined and passionate about helping us try to get more restaurants signed up for the initiative - it is amazing how committed he is to the project."
