Businesses and community organisations across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire are being encouraged to begin early preparations for the CARES Community Solar Fund 2026, which is expected to support new community and shared-ownership solar projects across Scotland.

Delivered by Local Energy Scotland, the CARES programme provides funding and development support to help communities establish renewable energy projects that deliver long-term local benefit. Solar PV is expected to remain a key focus, particularly for community buildings, schools, leisure facilities, warehouses and suitable commercial premises across the North-east.

Community solar projects can help reduce energy costs, create sustainable income streams for local initiatives and support regional net zero ambitions. They also present opportunities for local businesses to engage, whether by hosting solar installations, participating in shared-ownership models or supporting project development.

Stuart Munro of i-PROTECH said: “Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire have a strong opportunity to deliver practical, community-focused solar projects that benefit both local organisations and the wider region. The most successful CARES projects are those that start planning early, with clear sites, partners and technical understanding in place. We are keen to work with community groups and host organisations to help develop projects that are ready when funding opens.”

Organisations interested in exploring community solar opportunities ahead of CARES 2026 are encouraged to begin early planning by identifying suitable rooftops or sites, opening conversations with local community groups or development trusts, and seeking early technical and feasibility advice. Early engagement can help ensure projects are well positioned when applications open.
