Aberdeen in the North-east of Scotland has been voted as the second safest city in the UK, according to recent statistics revealed by a national league table.
The Alternative UK University City League Table has found that Aberdeen has the second lowest crime rate in the UK.
The study looked at which cities across the UK have the lowest number of burglaries, robberies and violent crimes per 1,000 of the population over a period of three years.
The statistic comes as great news for residents and students studying at the universities in Aberdeen, and adds to the city’s long standing record of safety.
In 2014 Aberdeen became the first city in Scotland to be awarded the prestigious Purple Flag accreditation in recognition of its commitment to promoting a safe and secure night time economy. It has since secured the award for four years in a row.
Jan Cutting, vice principal for commercial and regional engagement at Robert Gordon University (RGU), said: “This is another great achievement for the city and is testament to Aberdeen’s commitment to ensure if offers a safe place to live, study and work.
“It is so important for students to know that they can go about their day-to-day lives and enjoy nights out without having to worry about their safety.
“This is a great statistic for Aberdeen to be proud of as it highlights the major strides made in recent years to maintain the city as one of the safest, secure and vibrant places, not only in Scotland but across the UK.”
The same survey also ranked Aberdeen sixth for LGBTQ friendliness and ninth for average graduate salary.
Of the five areas the league covered, including the price of a pint and sustainability, Aberdeen came out at tenth overall, of over 30 cities included.
The good news continues for Aberdeen as in a recent survey conducted by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the region scored very highly in the overall happiness and life satisfaction of its residents, achieving a low score for anxiety.
Some contributing factors to these impressive statistics may include the abundance of castles, beaches and countryside landscape on Aberdeen residents’ doorsteps.
This, alongside the array of great shopping centres and diverse nightlife, means there is always plenty to do in the city and shire.
